CUNARD WHITE STAR LINE, PAIR OF BERGERE CHAIRS, POSSIBLY BY WARING & GILLOWS OR G.T. RACKSTRAW, C-1938, MADE FOR THE FIRST CLASS BALLROOM OF THE RMS "QUEEN ELIZABETH".
AN EXCITING AND RARE OPPORTUNITY TO ACQUIRE A PAIR OF BEAUTIFUL CHAIRS FROM ONE OF THE ICONIC LINERS FINEST PUBLIC ROOMS. AS ANYONE WILL TELL YOU WE ALL KNOW THE SAD DEMISE OF THE 'LIZZIE' IN HONG KONG HARBOR, SHE WAS LARGELY INTACT AND STILL FULL OF THE MAJORITY OF HER FIXTURES AND FITTINGS, THEY ALL BURNED. THESE MANAGED TO SURVIVE AS CUNARD WANTED TO REFRESH THE SHIP IN THE 1960'S AND TOTALLY REMODELED THE STUNNING BALLROOM INTO AN UGLY TAVERN STYLE CLUB WITH MID CENTURY FURNITURE CLASHING WITH THE LINERS FAMOUS WOODEN INTERIORS. THESE CHAIRS WERE SURPLUS AND SOLD BY CUNARD AROUND 1965 AND HAVE REMAINED IN PRIVATE OWNERSHIP EVER SINCE.
THEY ARE VERY COMFORTABLE, THE FRAMES ARE MAHOGANY WITH THE ORIGINAL AND BEAUTIFUL BRASS SHOES OR FEET KNOWN AS SABOT.
THE ROOM DID NOT HAVE MANY OF THIS PARTICULAR SHAPE, PERHAPS ONLY A HALF DOZEN OR SO, THEY CAN CLEARLY BE SEEN DOTTED AROUND THE OUTSIDE EDGE OF THE ROOM (SEE ARCHIVAL PICTURES). ONE MARKED ON THE UNDERSIDE 'CABIN SALOON' WHICH WOULD DATE TO C-1938 PRIOR TO BEING INSTALLED ON THE ABORTED MAIDEN VOYAGE DUE TO THE WAR AND 'CABIN' AS IT WAS ON THE QUEEN MARY BEING THE NAME FOR FIRST CLASS. THE OTHER IS MARKED THE SAME WAY BUT HAS BEEN PAINTED OVER.
IN CONDITION AS SHOWN, ONE SLIGHT HOLE TO THE CAIN WORK BUT HARDLY NOTICABLE AND ONLY MENTIONED FOR TOTAL ACCURACY, OTHERWISE IN GOOD ORDER, THEY WOULD SING WITH BEING REFINISHED BUT ARE TOTALLY ORIGINAL AS THE DAY THEY LEFT THE SHIP. PLEASE CONSULT AND SEE PICTURES.
