Cunard White Star Line, RMS 'Queen Mary', 1st Class 'M' deck inside stateroom wastepaper basket, c-1936, probably produced by G.T. Rackstraw Ltd.
This example dates from the ships maiden voyage period with fine veneer that runs from top to bottom, the veneer running flush over the top of the basket. It was found that the veneer chipped easily with the removal of the baskets liners. Subsequently the baskets were re designed with solid wood beading at the edge which proved ore durable than the original version. This being one of the rarer early first examples.
Stamped on the base with an 'M' deck internal stateroom, an later stencil indicates the basket was later used elsewhere on the ship, which for Cunard was standard practise.
In very fine condition, complete with liner. One of a pair, another identical example is available, please enquire for details.
